History: Have you ever heard of the ancient Irish myth, Tochmarc Étaíne or The Wooing Of Étaín? No, of course you haven't. While the tale does fantasize a little, a good portion of it is very true. I was born the daughter of a King. I grew up quite privileged, but like all famous love stories, I fell in love with a man, Midir. He was of the fairy people, and lived within the mountains. I was to be his second wife, but he loved me better, and so his first wife, Fúamnach, was very jealous of me. She did all she could to get rid of me, and since she was a very powerful witch, it was quite simple for her. She eventually turned me into a butterfly, and had the winds blow me away from my husband. For seven years the winds raged, but when I was finally able to come back, she cast another wind that lasted another seven years.
Here is where the tale gets a little sketchy, and the storybooks have it quite confused. *Sinister laugh* When I was finally able to return to my home, Oengus, Midir's foster son let me in by opening the window for me. You see, being fae, he knew who I was. I was so angry at Fúamnach, that I flew into her mouth to try and choke her to death...but instead of killing her, she swallowed me and by way of magic, she became pregnant with me. In the womb, I remembered everything...so when the time of my second birth arrived, Fúamnach died in labor with me. I had my revenge upon her, but I had not known at the time that she cast a terrible curse upon me that would be set into motion after the birth of my son.
Unfortunately, after I was born, I had no recollection of my passed life, my previous husband or Fúamnach. It was not until I was of age that my past came back to me, and Midir found me. However, by then, I was already married again, to Eochaid Airem, the High King of Ireland, or Oisin as many called him. Not to mention that my new husband's brother, oddly enough named Ailill, also adored me. That was another huge mess that I do not wish to get into at the moment, but I had loved all three of them every bit as much as they had loved me...and I had been wronged by each...and every...single...one of them.
Fortunately, one good thing came from my marriage to Oisin. My son, Oscar. When he died in the battle of Gowra, many believed that I had died of a broken heart. While I had been heartbroken to lose my one and only son, I did not pass away from it. Rather, the curse that Fúamnach placed upon me came to be. I would live forever with my guilt, feasting upon the blood of man, and this is how I have been...doomed to eternal youth, with my mind plagued by all the hardship and sorrow that I could not change in my life.
I do believe I have gone mad.
